LONDON: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party Rishi Sunak is confident of returning for another term.
He insisted that this party was on track to win the next general election despite the setback in recent local elections He vowed to “keep at it” and deliver for the public, adding that he will win the next election and stay on as PM when asked whether he would again assume office after the next general election.
“I’m confident we can deliver for people. I know that things are tough right now, but I think we have made good progress in the six months that I’ve been in the job. I’ll just keep at it,” he said.
DUP deal ruled out: The Prime Minister also ruled out any chances of a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) after the general election. Incidentally, the DUP supported the Theresa May government in 2017. When asked about the possibilities of a hung Parliament, he told reporters that he was not particularly interested in any “chat or anything about coalitions”.
His reaction came despite a recent poll showing that Labour would be on course to become the largest party at the next election.
According to a Sky News projection, this would be the lowest total for the Conservatives since the 198 seats it won in 2005.
The study showed that the Tories would lose 127 MPs, dropping from 365 to 238. Local elections: Based on analysis of change in vote share across 1,500 wards, Labour promised to be the most popular party with 36 per cent, with Conservative share at 29 per cent. While the Lib Dems reflected 18 per cent, others stood at 17 per cent.
In local government polls, Labour emerged as the largest party – the first time since 2002. The party has also won overall control of Dover district council for the first time since 1995. The Conservatives have lost control of 48 councils and 1,061 council seats
