The UK government has announced the establishment of a brand-new independent UK Semiconductor Institute, marking a significant milestone in supporting the country’s Semiconductor Strategy with a substantial backing of £1 billion.

For the first time, this initiative will bring together government, universities, and the private sector to bolster key components of the Semiconductor Strategy and drive growth in the sector.

According to an official statement, the Institute’s primary objective is to serve as a hub for chip researchers, ensuring they have access to requisite tools and infrastructure to advance their work in key focus areas.

The Semiconductor Institute’s overarching goal is to invigorate innovation, research, and commercialisation efforts within the industry

“Our aim is that in the future the Institute will be established as an independent organisation tasked with making sure chip researchers have the tools and infrastructure needed to drive their work forward in these focus areas and convert their innovation into market-ready products, subject to final checks,” said the official statement.

Moreover, as the UK forges further international semiconductor agreements, the Institute will emerge as a centralised gateway for technology businesses and global partners seeking to collaborate with the UK semiconductor sector. The overarching goal is to invigorate innovation, research, and commercialisation efforts within the industry.

Saqib Bhatti, Technology Minister, hailed the establishment of the UK Semiconductor Institute as a pivotal milestone in the nation’s journey towards becoming a science and tech superpower by 2030. “Building on the early success of the strategy, the UK Semiconductor Institute will unify the semiconductor sector to focus our talented researchers on securing our status at the cutting edge of semiconductor science. This is a hugely significant milestone on our journey to becoming a science and tech superpower by 2030.”

Skills programmes

In line with the Semiconductor Advisory Panel’s priorities, the Institute will also spearhead efforts to enhance specialist skills essential for sectoral growth. This initiative builds upon previous investments, including £4.8 million allocated for eleven skills programmes across the UK earlier this year.

Aligned with the key focus areas identified in the National Semiconductor Strategy, the Institute will prioritise British strengths in compound chips, design, and research and development.
