THE UK’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero has given Equinor the green light to expand the Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farms in North Norfolk. These projects, already supplying approximately 710,000 households with power, are set to double their capacity, providing renewable energy for an additional 785,000 homes.
“We are delighted with the Secretary of State’s decision to award consent, doubling the capacity of the existing projects, and clearing the way forward to significantly contribute to the UK’s offshore wind and net zero targets by 2030,” said Halfdan Brustad, Equinor’s Vice President for UK Renewables.
Brustad emphasised the meticulous development process of the extension projects over the last five years, incorporating innovative approaches to transmission planning and community engagement. “The extensions build on our longstanding presence in Norfolk and we look forward to contributing even more positively to the local region and the UK’s offshore wind growth,” he added.
This approval marks a notable advancement in the renewable energy sector, representing the first instance where two separate offshore wind projects, each under distinct ownership, have received consent through a shared application. This pioneering approach sets the stage for combining the development of both projects, showcasing a collaborative effort aimed at maximising efficiency and progress in renewable energy initiatives.
