Sandeepp SaxenaNEW YORK: The United Nations headquarters in New York was abuzz with a distinctive exhibition that spotlighted India’s groundbreaking initiative, ‘Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment).

Launched jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres in October 2022, this initiative was a clarion call for sustainable living practices and responsible environmental stewardship.

The two-day exhibition, which was inaugurated on August 16, drew a distinguished audience, including diplomats, UN officials, and delegates, who converged to witness and engage with the principles driving sustainable living. Addressing the audience, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, marked the occasion as the initiation of an inspirational journey – the unfolding of Mission LiFE.

Thoughtful consumption

Ambassador Kamboj underlined that Mission LiFE transcended official policy; it represented a collective commitment that began with each individual. “It embodied the recognition of the potency of small adjustments in our daily lives, advocating the ethos of thoughtful consumption,” she emphasised, spotlighting the significance of every resource and the deliberate steps towards sustainability.

A pivotal feature of the exhibition was the lifesized representation of ‘Prakriti’, the mascot of Mission LiFE, adorned with messages advocating sustainable living

Circular economy

PM Modi’s clarion call to adopt the principles of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and to embrace a circular economy resonated within the core of Mission LiFE. India’s commitment to confronting the formidable challenge of climate change was unequivocal. Ambassador Kamboj affirmed that Mission LiFE embodied India’s unwavering dedication to both environmental stewardship and citizen well-being.

With a compelling appeal to UN envoys and the global community, Kamboj implored them not to merely bear witness but to partake in this movement, embracing the roles of catalysts for change. The narrative of the planet’s future, she urged, could be rewritten through collective effort. “Together, let’s shape a legacy of responsible stewardship that our future generations will inherit with pride. Let Mission LiFE illuminate the path to a sustainable tomorrow,” resonated the fervent message from the Indian envoy.
