MUMBAI: The financial capital of India is going through some major changes. One of them is the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). It is a grade-separated highway that would connect Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north along Mumbai’s western shore.

Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inspected this coastal road. According to reports, the first phase of the project is nearly complete and India’s first undersea tunnel will open in November.

The Marine Drive to Bandra Worli Sea Link phase includes an underwater tunnel that is almost 3 km long. For this dig, 35 workers and a sizable tunnel boring machine produced in China were employed. The tunnel travels from close to Girgaon, past the Arabian Sea, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Malabar Hill, before coming to an end close to Bridge Candy Hospital.

The total cost of the coastal road project is Rs 12,700 crore. The amount of traffic in the city and suburbs will decrease after this project is finished. The South and North halves of the coastal road project are separated. More than 70 per cent of the work has already been finished on this project’s southern portion.

In the meantime, the work for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is in full swing, and it will start operating soon. Underwater travel is possible on the Bullet Train between Mumbai and Thane. There will be a tunnel connecting the Shilphata and BandraKurla stations on Thane Bay.
