LONDON: The UKIBC has welcomed the landmark notification from the Bar Council of India that will enable international law firms to participate in select fields in India.
This sends a strong, progressive message that India is open to international investment and collaboration, which will help to attract FDI into the country and support India’s global ambitions, according to the UKIBC.
It will also enable international collaboration between firms to develop the legal sector in India and aid local law firms to move up the value chain, it said. As the BCI’s notification states: “Opening up of law practice in India to foreign lawyers in the field of practice of foreign law; diverse international legal issues in non-litigious matters and in international arbitration cases would go a long way in helping legal profession/domain grow in India to the benefit of lawyers in India too.”
UKIBC CEO Richard McCallum said, “This is yet another welcome step, which further signals India’s commitment to collaborating across many sectors with partners from across the world. We look forward to working with our members and Indian stakeholders in areas of where the UKIBC and our network can add value.”
