LONDON: Britain Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled a new science initiative aimed at developing floodtolerant rice, disease-resistant wheat, and other crops resilient to climate change.

In his address at the Global Food Security Summit in London on November 20, Sunak emphasised the need for a ‘fundamental shift’ to address the global food-security crisis exacerbated by climate change. He highlighted the role of science and unveiled plans for a ‘virtual science hub’ connecting international researchers focused on resilient crops.

Sunak urged world leaders at the summit to leverage Artificial Intelligence and cutting-edge technology to combat malnutrition globally. The event, co-hosted by Somalia and the United Arab Emirates, alongside philanthropic foundations, coincided with the release of the UK’s updated development strategy through 2030.

The strategy outlines a plan to end extreme poverty, tackle climate change, and biodiversity loss. However, it confirms that the UK will not restore development aid to 0.7 per cent of gross national income, maintaining it at 0.5 per cent until “the fiscal situation allows.”

Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasised the need for collaborative partnerships with developing nations rather than a top-down approach. The summit faced protests from activists urging a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza.
