Sandeepp SaxenaNEW DELHI: India’s G20 presidency is “incredibly important” according to British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat. During his three-day visit to India from August 10-12, the Minister highlighted India’s adept leadership in tackling global challenges, particularly those related to food security. He emphasised the timeliness and appropriateness of India’s presidency in light of global circumstances.

During its G20 presidency, India has consistently raised concerns of the Global South, focusing on critical issues such as food, fuel, and fertilisers. The agenda also encompasses broader goals like promoting comprehensive global growth, swift attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs), and the advancement of eco-friendly initiatives.

The British Security Minister noted that India’s leadership was particularly vital in the present landscape of global challenges. Tugendhat expressed gratitude for India’s diligent efforts in both guiding its own nation and providing support to others worldwide through its G20 Presidency.

Speaking on matters of security cooperation between India and the UK amidst ongoing global geopolitical shifts, Tugendhat indicated a shared perspective between the two nations.

FTA on track

Turning to the ambitious IndiaUK trade agreement, Tugendhat expressed optimism, assuring that both parties were actively engaged in negotiations. He highlighted the importance of reaching an agreement that benefits the citizens of both countries, expressing confidence in the eventual success of these discussions.

While refraining from setting a specific timeline for the trade deal, Tugendhat affirmed his belief in the ability to reach an accord. Notably, efforts towards the agreement had faced challenges, and the timeline initially set in April of the previous year was not met due to certain disparities and evolving political situations.

The India-UK relationship, characterised as a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, has witnessed remarkable progress since the virtual summit held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in May 2021. This partnership outlined a 10-year roadmap, encompassing key areas such as trade, defence, security, climate change, and people-to-people ties, signifying a strong foundation for the future.
