LONDON: In an announcement on August 24, the UK Government disclosed plans to host a two-day international summit in November aimed at exploring the safe development of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This ‘world-first’ event is scheduled to be held on November 1-2 and will take place at Bletchley Park, renowned for its historical significance as the site where British code-breakers deciphered Nazi Germany’s ‘Enigma’ code during World War II.

The location also houses the National Museum of Computing, home to extensive collection of operational historical computers.

This initiative comes amid growing concerns voiced by experts about the potential risks of AI lacking adequate regulation. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak highlighted the need to address these concerns to ensure the responsible advancement of AI.

PM Sunak, who has referred to AI as “the defining technology of our time,” initially proposed the summit during a visit to Washington in June.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, made a noteworthy move in the same month, announcing plans to establish its first international office outside the United States in London. The UK Government welcomed this decision as a vote of confidence in the country’s AI capabilities.

PM Sunak envisions London as the future home for a global AI regulator and aims for the UK to participate actively in the establishment of an AI code of conduct alongside the United States and the European Union.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, advocates for long-term institutional oversight of AI while cautioning against excessive regulation that could impede rapid technological progress. The company’s choice of London for its international office is attributed to the city’s thriving tech ecosystem and abundant talent pool.
