LONDON: In a bid to foster innovation and collaboration in the energy sector, Innovate UK, the innovation agency of the UK Government, unveiled the UK-South Africa Smart Energy Global Innovation Network at the Africa Energy Indaba held in Cape Town from March 5 to 7.
Spearheaded by Innovate UK’s Global Alliance Africa project based in South Africa, this initiative aims to bridge the gap between energy innovators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors from both nations.
The network’s overarching objective is to catalyse the development and adoption of digital, smart, and AI-enabled technologies within the energy sectors of the UK and South Africa. This strategic launch aligns with the ongoing transition efforts of both countries, as they pivot towards sustainable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar power, veering away from fossil fuel.Innovate UK’s knowledge transfer manager for South Africa, Matthew Bray, emphasised the transformative potential of this shift. “This paradigm shift is creating new opportunities in fields such as smart grid development, interconnection, energy storage and demand management.” said Bray.
“But in doing so, we are inviting complexities into the system – complexities which will need to be efficiently managed,” he added, while acknowledging the complexities inherent in these advancements.
Bray further underscored the critical role of data-driven technologies such as machine learning and deep learning in facilitating the transition to sustainable energy. He likened the energy sector’s evolution to other industries like finance, commerce, and agriculture, emphasising the need for innovative solutions to navigate the complexities of this transition effectively.
The Smart Energy Global Innovation Network, developed in consultation with local and UK ecosystems, aims to facilitate mutual knowledge sharing and enable the testing, funding, and adaptation of locally-developed solutions in each other’s markets. The network will focus on four key initiatives: knowledge exchange, joint research and development, expert tours for South African organisations to engage with UK energy stakeholders, and research, all directed towards three core areas: integration of renewable energy, construction of smarter grids, and application of AI in the energy sector.
According to Innovate UK, these initiatives are poised to drive significant advancements in sustainable energy practices and foster impactful collaborations between the UK and South Africa.
