LONDON: If you can spare anything over £150,000 (about Rs 1.53 crore) you may try buying some 25 acres of virgin land off the southern coast of Scotland. It’s like the proverbial ‘no soul in sight’ place, in a serene and pristine setting. The site is Barlocco Island, lying about 160 km from Edinburgh.
The lush green grass and rocky outcrops stretch to the sea, reported CNN. No one has ever applied for permission to build on the island, thus there is no building. A flood pond provides water for livestock and wildlife in the winter.
London 560-km away
The closest town is about 10 km away, from where it takes an hour by road to reach the closest train station. And London is over 560 km from there.
It is situated in one of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), which as defined in the UK are those areas of land and water that are considered best to represent its natural heritage in terms of their flora, fauna, geology, geomorphology, or mixture of such features
More options available
According to NatureScot, Scotland’s nature agency which works to improve natural environment and inspire everyone to care more about it, the country has 1,422 SSSIs, covering around 1,011,000 hectares or 12.6 per cent of the land area (above mean low water springs).
In case you are looking for a different island or want to weigh options, you may visit the website Private Islands, Inc. The CNN report on Barlocco Island also provides a link to another article that tells you buying a private island with a contact to what was once a secretive process, now in the open on the internet.
