UNITED NATIONS: India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the 62nd session of Commission for Social Development. This is the first time in nearly 50 years that India has held this prestigious position within the UN agency.
Expressing her pride and commitment, Kamboj tweeted on July 27, “India takes immense pride in assuming this Chairmanship and remains steadfast in its commitment to leading with its core principles, working diligently for the welfare and prosperity of the global community.”
The primary focus of Kamboj’s role as the Chair is to bolster international cooperation concerning social development matters, with a special emphasis on fostering social policies that accelerate progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the overarching goal of poverty eradication.
Emphasising the significance of the Commission’s role, Kamboj stressed that it serves as an eminent intergovernmental body dedicated to addressing social challenges and advising the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on social policies of a general character.
The Commission for Social Development, since the World Summit for Social Development in 1995, has been the key UN body responsible for the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. The summit in Copenhagen was a landmark event, where governments reached a new consensus on putting people at the centre of development, focusing on poverty eradication, full employment, and social integration as overriding development objectives.
The 62nd session’s central theme is “Fostering Social Development and Social Justice through Social Policies,” highlighting the crucial connection between social development and social justice in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
