NEW DELHI: The upcoming state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington DC, in June, holds great significance as it indicates deepening of strategic partnership between the United States and India.

The invitation extended by the Biden administration to the Modi-led Government sends a clear message of their commitment to working together.

The visit will focus on exploring newer areas of cooperation, including emerging technologies, supply chain diversification, and knowledge partnerships.

Common challenges

The discussions between the two leaders will cover expanding educational exchanges, strengthening people-to-people ties, and addressing common challenges such as climate change, workforce development, and health security.

PM Modi is expected to lead International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations in New York on June 21, with broad international participation. He will also engage with top business leaders and political figures in the US.

This state visit is particularly significant as it marks only the third time in diplomatic history that a US President has invited an Indian leader for such an occasion. The previous invitees were President S Radhakrishnan in 1963 and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2009. Previous visits by Indian leaders were official or working visits.

Diplomatic schedule

The Indian PM’s visit comes amidst a busy diplomatic schedule for both countries. PM Modi and President Biden will engage on multiple occasions this year, including the G7 meeting in Hiroshima, simultaneous visits to Papua New Guinea, and the upcoming Quad leaders’ summit in Australia.

President Biden plans to visit New Delhi in September for the G20 summit, potentially combined with a bilateral visit.

ICET initiative

The visit takes place against the backdrop of the consolidation of bilateral strategic ties. The Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET), focusing on areas like semiconductor manufacturing, defense innovation, artificial intelligence, and higher education, serves as a roadmap for cooperation. The White House has promised to expedite the review of General Electric’s application to jointly produce jet engines in India. Both countries are actively exploring avenues for collaboration in trade and investment.

Modi’s visit signifies a deepening partnership and sets the stage for future collaboration between India and the US, highlighting their shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
