LONDON: As the tragic scenes from the train accident site in Odisha unfolded around the world over the weekend, a diaspora group in the UK launched an urgent fundraiser to assist the families of victims impacted by one of India’s worst railway disasters.
Friends of India Society International (FISI) UK has launched a Go Fund Me appeal, which has already attracted over £4,700 in donations within hours of being set up.
“A devastating train accident has occurred in Odisha, India, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. Tragically, there are over 280 fatalities and over 900 injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with families and friends affected by this shocking incident,” the FISI UK appeal reads.
Traumatic, devastating “Undoubtedly, it is traumatic and devastating for both the survivors and the ones who have lost their loved ones. It will take a lot of time and effort for them to heal. In such distressed times, we must come together and lend our support,” it notes.
The fundraising campaign for the victims and their families is aimed at providing immediate aid and relief.
“The money generated shall be used for providing essential support and aid to the victims of this tragedy,” said the international non-profit organisation.
The appeal came as senior British Government ministers took to social media to express their condolences and solidarity with India in this time of tragedy
