Nigeria partners with Unesco for sustainable development

NIGERIA embarks on a significant collaborative initiative, underscored by its partnership with the India-UN Partnership Development Fund. A joint effort between the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), this undertaking seeks to propel Nigeria towards a future characterised by environmental sustainability and economic resilience.

The core tenets of equality, mutual respect, and shared development find resonance in the remarks of Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the UN. Earlier this year, addressing the 21st session of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, her words underscored the fundamental principles underpinning this collaboration.

For a green economy

Framed within the context of SouthSouth Cooperation, Nigeria’s alliance with the India-UN Partnership Development Fund holds promise for shaping a greener, ecologically balanced economy. Informed by successful models in neighbouring countries, this initiative aspires to nurture biodiversity-friendly enterprises in tropical climates, thereby promoting sustainable practices and economic growth. Central to this initiative is the aspiration to harmonise the relationship between communities and their natural surroundings.

The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria and Unesco recognise the challenges posed by unsustainable practices that threaten biodiversity and livelihoods. The project intends to address these issues by fostering initiatives such as apiculture, snail rearing, mushroom cultivation, and fish farming, all designed to support local economies while safeguarding the environment.

Two-year project

Over a two-year span, this initiative aims to involve 900 families (equivalent to 4,500 individuals), representing diverse demographics – 40% men, 30% women, and 30% youth – across three biosphere reserve communities. The India-UN Partnership Development Fund serves as the cornerstone of financial support and strategic guidance for the successful realisation of these goals.

Looking beyond national borders, this endeavour seeks to catalyse similar biodiversity conservation efforts in neighbouring countries. The potential for crossborder knowledge-sharing and collaboration holds the promise of a more interconnected and ecologically conscious region.

The partnership bears the hallmark of the India-UN Partnership Development Fund, and it serves as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. As the project unfolds, it is set to not only drive change within the country but also illuminate a pragmatic path for other nations within similar ecological contexts.
