MICROSOFT has decided to go full throttle on development of ai in the uk with a hefty £2.5 billion investment. The initiative will bolster AI data centres across the nation.
The announcement has sent ripples of excitement through the tech community — a move hailed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as a “turning point for the future of AI infrastructure and development in the UK.”
The tech behemoth’s ambitious plan aims to significantly ramp up the capacity of its UK data centres. Over 20,000 advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) will come up by 2026, a crucial step towards advancing machine learning and AI model development.
The expansion drive will prioritise fortifying facilities in London and Cardiff, with potential plans for further expansion into northern England. What sets apart this announcement is the fact that beyond the mere expansion of infrastructure, it will also create jobs for locals. Microsoft plans to train one million individuals with the requisite skills to thrive in the burgeoning AI economy.
Moreover, the company has pledged to collaborate closely with the Government and academic institutions on AI safety and research initiatives, underscoring its commitment to responsible AI development.
Microsoft’s Vice-Chairman and President Brad Smith reiterated the company’s commitment to establishing world-leading AI infrastructure in the UK. “Microsoft is committed as a company to ensuring that the UK as a country has world-leading AI infrastructure, easy access to the skills people need, and broad protections for safety and security.”
Sunak said, “The UK started the global conversation on AI earlier this month, and Microsoft’s historic investment is further evidence of the leading role we continue to play in expanding the frontiers of AI to harness its economic and scientific benefits,” he said stressing the importance of ensuring accessibility to essential skills and implementing robust safety measures.
Microsoft UK Chief Executive Officer Clare Barclay emphasised the urgency of action in light of AI’s rapid evolution, characterising the investment as the largest in the company’s four-decade history in the UK.
The pace of change in AI demands action today to build a prosperous future for the UK tomorrow” he said. In response, Prime Minister Sunak lauded the UK’s crucial role in propelling AI advancements, citing Microsoft’s substantial investment as a testament to the nation’s leadership in harnessing the economic and scientific potential of AI.
This commitment follows Microsoft’s recent engagements with UK regulators and the Government, notably in response to regulatory hurdles surrounding its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard earlier this year. Despite initial challenges, the Competition and Markets Authority eventually greenlit the case following adjustments by Microsoft.
