NEW DELHI: India is set to deploy defence attaches in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Philippines, Armenia, and Poland, marking a notable shift in its strategic approach to strengthening ties with key regions amidst escalating geopolitical tensions. The move is part of a plan to establish 26 new missions globally, with 18 designated for African nations alone.

India spearheaded efforts to include the African Union in G20 during last year’s summit in New Delhi. These new postings aim to underscore Africa’s strategic importance and create avenues for military cooperation and arms sales, particularly as many African countries seek to modernise their armed forces.

According to a newspaper, this is the first time that defence attaches will be appointed for Poland and Armenia which shows the growing significance of these two nations as security partners. The move comes close on the heels of an arms deal with Armenia and highlights Poland’s rising importance in European security dynamics.

Defence attaches play a crucial role in various capacities. They operate within diplomatic missions abroad and facilitate communication and collaboration between their home country’s military and the host country’s military. As per a report by PTI, New Delhi is assigning a new defence attaché to the small African nation of Djibouti, which holds strategic significance.
