Maldivian Foreign Minister has lauded India for allowing exports of essential commodities to his country. On April 6, Moosa Zameer was full of praise for India’s unwavering commitment to bolstering bilateral trade and commerce.

Upon request from Maldives, India has agreed to renew the quota set for exports of essential commodities to the island nation. The gesture symbolised enduring bilateral friendship between Maldives and India, said the minister, reaffirming mutual commitment to advancing trade and commerce.

On April 5, the Indian High Commission in Male had said that “India allowed the export of certain quantities of essential commodities for the year 2024-25 at the request of the Maldives government.”

The action, facilitated through a distinctive bilateral mechanism, signifies an upward adjustment in the quotas for essential items. It has reached unprecedented levels since the inception of this arrangement in 1981.

“I sincerely thank EAM @DrSJaishankar and the Government of #India for the renewal of the quota to enable #Maldives to import essential commodities from India during the years 2024 and 2025,” wrote Zameer expressing his appreciation on social media platform X.

Responding to Zameer’s message, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First and Security and Growth for All in the Region (Sagar) policies.

The Sagar policy epitomises India’s strategic vision for maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, while the Neighbourhood First Policy underscores India’s prioritisation of its neighbouring countries in its diplomatic engagements. This renewal of the quota comes at a crucial juncture amidst diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives, which surfaced in November last year
