NEW DELHI: During the handover meeting of the G20 Employment Working Group (EWG) on November 7 in Geneva, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo expressed his deep appreciation for India’s leadership during its G20 presidency.

Houngbo commended the G20 ministers for their dedication to addressing crucial issues such as the portability of social security and skills mapping. These matters, he emphasised, would demand sustained efforts and significant follow-up actions.

Just transitions

He thanked the participants for their support of the UN’s Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions. He highlighted its historic inclusion in the Leaders’ Declaration, a testament to India’s clear leadership and diplomatic efforts in a challenging global environment. The G20 declaration outlined key policy priorities, signifying a shared commitment to promoting decent work and inclusive social protection policies for all. The comprehensive approach includes recognising the importance of well-integrated and adequately skilled workers, supporting the mapping of global skill gaps, and strengthening national statistical data.

India’ strategic vision

Houngbo extended gratitude to India for its exemplary leadership, collaborative spirit, and dedication to creating more equitable and sustainable future for all. He noted that India’s strategic vision and active involvement were particularly evident in commitments such as the extension of the ILO and OECD Skills for Jobs Databases to G20 countries.

The commitment to consider the development of an international reference classification of occupations by skill and qualification requirements demonstrates India’s foresight in facilitating cross-country comparability and mutual recognition of skills and qualifications. The toolkit introduced for digital up-skilling and reskilling programmes reflects India’s dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.
