NEW DELHI: India has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with many religious and ethnic communities calling it home. Among these is a small but historically significant Jewish community, whose presence in India can be traced back to over a thousand years.

Today, the Jewish community in India is estimated to number around 5,000 individuals, spread across various parts of the country. This community can be broadly divided into five groups – the Bene Israelis of western India, the Baghdadi Jews of West Bengal, the Cochin Jews of Kerala, the Bnei Menashe Jews of northeast India, and the Bene Ephraims of Andhra Pradesh.

Unlike in many other parts of the world, the Jewish community in India has not experienced persecution or prejudice due to their faith. In fact, India is almost unique in its attitude towards its Jewish population, with no known incidents of anti-Semitism in the country.

Many Indian Jews have immigrated to Israel motivated not by fear or persecution, but by a conviction that Israel was their ultimate homeland. Today, there are still about 18 synagogues in India, many of which are remarkably well-preserved, although mostly not in use.
