STUDENTS from India are flocking to universities in Germany in unprecedented numbers, marking their presence as the largest group of international students in the country.

As reported by TOI, amidst this burgeoning trend, the German Government is strategically addressing its labour shortages, underscoring a symbiotic relationship between academic pursuits and professional opportunities.

“At 43,000, Indian students form the largest contingent of international scholars in Germany. It is imperative to enhance the appeal of the German labour market for Indian graduates, thus bridging the widening gap in skilled workforce demand,” said Joybrato Mukherjee, President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), during a press interaction in New Delhi.

Mukherjee further emphasised the consequential outcomes of dialogues between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, coupled with Germany’s recent enactment of the Skilled Immigration Act. This legislative stride paves a smoother trajectory for Indian graduates with German qualifications, rendering employment prospects in Germany and other Schengen area nations more enticing.

“We advocate for brain circulation over brain drain, firmly believing that well-qualified international students can chart a thriving professional trajectory in Germany,” Mukherjee said further.

Statistics from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany illuminate a remarkable 26 per cent surge in Indian student enrolment over the past year, culminating in a staggering 42,997 enrollees for the winter semester of 2022-23.

Engineering emerges as the favoured discipline among Indian students, comprising 60 per cent of enrolments, followed by law, management, social studies (22 per cent), and mathematics and natural sciences (14 per cent).
