NEW DELHI: Cementing its commitment to global development, India has allocated $700,000 from UN Development Partnership (UNDP) funds to bolster clean water initiatives and propel community development in Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation.

The step is yet another example of India’s position as a reliable partner in driving progress on the international stage.

The sole public school in Tuvalu will gain from this funding. A sturdy concrete water cistern, with a capacity of 760 cubic metres, will be constructed to serve as a reservoir of clean water, and cater to the needs of students, educators, and school personnel. It will boost hygiene standards and curtail the prevalence of water-borne diseases, nurturing a healthier environment for education.

Announcing this financial aid on social media platform X (Twitter), Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, underlined the significance of fortifying bonds with Pacific island nations. She stated, “Strengthening bonds with Pacific island nations, India commits USD 700,000 from the #IndiaUNFund to support clean water initiatives and community development in #Tuvalu’s schools. A testament to India’s role as a reliable development partner.”

Envisioned by the Indian Government in June 2017, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund stands as a potent vehicle for positive transformation. Designed to lend support to developmental endeavours in emerging nations that align with Sustainable Development Goals, the Fund operates on the principles of SouthSouth cooperation.

It ardently advocates national ownership, equality, sustainability, local capacity enhancement, and mutual benefits. A total of $150 million has been earmarked by the Government of India over the next decade for the Fund’s cause. Total 75 development projects across 56 countries stand as a testament to the Fund’s impactful journey
