In a strategic advancement, India and Iran have formalised a significant 10-year contract to operate the Shahid-Behesti terminal at Chabahar Port, heralding a new era of economic collaboration and regional connectivity. The agreement, sealed by Indian Ports Global Ltd. (IPGL) and Iran’s Port & Maritime Organization, was signed in the presence of Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Iranian counterpart, Mehrdad Bazrpash.

Under this landmark deal, IPGL will invest $120 million in the initial development of Chabahar Port, alongside an additional credit line of $250 million set for further infrastructure improvements. These investments aim to enhance the port’s capacity and efficiency, paving the way for it to become a pivotal gateway to Central Asia and Afghanistan. The port, situated in Iran’s SistanBaluchistan province, offers a direct route from India’s western coast to the Arabian Sea, bypassing the often-volatile Strait of Hormuz.

Regional development

The agreement also includes provisions for the procurement of various pieces of equipment and machinery essential for the operational upliftment of Chabahar Port. Notably, India has already contributed six mobile harbor cranes and other vital equipment, worth around $25 million, showcasing its dedication to the project’s success.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal remarked on the occasion, “India’s continued investment in Chabahar Port underscores its commitment to regional economic development.” This agreement marks a noteworthy phase in India-Iran relations, setting a foundation for future collaborations and mutual benefits. The operational control over Chabahar not only facilitates India’s strategic interests in Central Asia but also serves as a crucial point for humanitarian efforts, as previously demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The development of Chabahar Port has been a focal point in IndiaIran negotiations for years, with both countries recognising its potential as a commercial hub for the region. The operationalisation of Chabahar Port represents a significant strategic leverage for India, providing an alternative and reliable route to the landlocked regions of Central Asia. The port’s development is also a testament to India’s broader foreign policy objectives aimed at securing a robust economic foothold in Central Asia, amidst competitive interests from neighboring Pakistan and its Karachi Port.
