LONDON: The United Kingdom is poised to usher in a new era of transportation with plans to put on trial its first electric flying taxis by 2026. This is expected to pave the way for their widespread adoption by the end of the decade, according to Government sources.

Announced on March 18, the Future of Flight initiative outlines a roadmap aimed at turning oncefictional technology into a reality in UK skies. Following initial trials in 2026, the first piloted flying taxi services are scheduled to begin regular operations by 2028, with demonstrations of pilot-less variants anticipated by 2030.

To support this groundbreaking mode of transportation, the Government intends to establish ‘vertiports’, tailored for drones and electric aircraft capable of vertical take-offs, will serve as essential hubs for this innovative technology. In addition to transforming passenger transport, the Government is exploring expanded applications of drones for crime prevention and emergency medical deliveries. Projections suggest that drone technology could inject £45 billion into the UK economy by 2030.

While flying air taxi trials have already commenced in the US, experts in the aviation sector foresee a global revolution on the horizon. Numerous startups have emerged, with giants like Boeing and Airbus backing ventures. The Civil Aviation Authority predicts widespread adoption of flying taxis, with the inaugural commercial flight of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft scheduled for the Paris Olympics.

Aviation and Technology Minister Anthony Browne stated, “Cutting-edge battery technology is poised to revolutionise transportation as we know it. This plan ensures that we have the necessary infrastructure and regulations in place to turn this vision into reality. From flying taxis to emergency service drones, we’re positioning the UK at the forefront of this transformative shift in transportation, thereby enhancing people’s lives and bolstering the economy.”
