IN a late-night development on February 11, the Qatar Government extended a much awaited relief to the families of eight former Indian Navy officers, who were embroiled in an alleged espionage case in 2022.
The news of their release came as a huge relief for their families, who were informed after they boarded their flights back home.
While the eight officers have now safely landed in India, one, Commander Purnendu Tiwari is yet to come back. Although he has been released from custody, the reasons behind the delay in his return are not clear.
The officials, employed by the Dohabased company Dahra Global, were detained in August 2022. While the specific charges against them by Qatari authorities have not been disclosed, they were reportedly accused of spying for Israel, as per a report in the UK daily Financial Times.
The detained individuals were identified as Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.
Their legal saga took a significant turn when, in December 2023, the appellate court in Qatar commuted their initial death sentences to varying terms of imprisonment, ranging from three to 25 years. Following the appellate court’s decision, family members had expressed desire to file an appeal in the Court of Cassation, Qatar’s highest judicial body.
In early January, a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the media that the legal team had been granted 60 days to file an appeal, stating, “The legal team has now received a copy of the court order, which is confidential in nature. Further, the legal team has been given 60 days to file an appeal in the Court of Cassation, Qatar’s highest court.
Our legal team is working on this issue to decide the next course of action, and we are in touch with the families and the legal team.”
In response to their release, the MEA said, “The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar.
Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India. We appreciate the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and homecoming of these nationals.”
