BEIJING: China’s state-controlled media outlet, The Global Times, has lauded India’s economic and diplomatic achievements over the past four years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The positive appraisal was encapsulated in an article titled ‘Bharat narrative’, which shed light on New Delhi’s evolving strategic approach in foreign policy, moving towards a great power strategy.
Zhang Jiadong, the Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, wrote highlighting India’s significant progress in various spheres during the preceding four years.
The article recognised India’s robust economic growth, improvements in urban governance, and a significant shift in its international relations approach, particularly concerning China.
Jiadong noted a significant change in India’s stance on the trade imbalance with China. While previously, Indian representatives focused primarily on China’s measures to address the trade gap, there’s now a shift towards highlighting India’s export potential.
The article also lauded India’s active promotion of a ‘Bharat narrative’, underscoring the country’s strategic self-assurance. Jiadong asserted that India, with its swift economic and social progress, has gained increased strategic confidence, actively shaping and advancing a “Bharat narrative”.
The transformation in India’s political and cultural spheres, moving from emphasising democratic consensus with the West to highlighting the ‘Indian feature’ of democratic politics, was highlighted.
According to Jiadong, this shift signifies India’s aspirations to break away from its historical colonial legacy and establish itself as a global force, politically and culturally.
