LONDON: The UK government has announced a new joint initiative with several prominent artificial intelligence (AI) vendors like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic for an “early or priority access” to their models.

This may be a strategic move aimed at bolstering the post-Brexit economy by positioning Britain as a prominent hub for AI development and investment. The government has already allocated £1bn to construct an exascale supercomputer for a dedicated AI Research Resource. Additionally, a £100m fund has been established to create a British AI taskforce focused on building new foundation models.

While the details of the agreement have not been revealed, it is believed that the UK government will gain a deeper understanding of each AI technology through this partnership. This will also help legislators to effectively evaluate the opportunities and risks associated with AI systems.

While the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that the UK government will gain a deeper understanding of each AI technology through this partnership.

The UK’s move coincides with the European Union’s efforts to draft new regulations for AI use across its member states. Critics argue that the EU’s proactivity in legislating emerging AI technologies could impede innovation, hinder growth, and place member states at a disadvantage compared to countries like the UK that have adopted a more cautious approach.

However, according to some industry experts there are potential drawbacks in the UK’s plans. They feel that companies like Google and OpenAI may exploit their relationship with the British government to further their own interests. They gave the example of the misuse of patient data by Google in partnership with the UK’s National Health Service.

Unless the details of the agreement are disclosed, it is difficult to accurately assess the true benefits for businesses and citizens.
