NEW DELHI: Mizoram and Assam have emerged as the “new active” sectors for infiltration among the five states that share international borders with Bangladesh, according to data released by the Border Security Force (BSF).
In 2022, there was a four-fold rise in intruder apprehension — from 41 in 2018 to 721 in 2022 in these two states alone.
South Bengal has also recorded a rise in intruder apprehension from 2,019 to 3,129, the BSF has informed the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to the latest official data of the last five years, 947 intruders were apprehended from Mizoram and Cachar, while 923 people were apprehended this year in the first two months.
The Indian side of the India-Bangladesh border passes through West Bengal (2,216.7 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km). A senior MHA official said the India-Bangladesh border is marked by a high degree of porosity and the checking of illegal cross-border activities and illegal migration from Bangladesh to India have been major challenges.
