NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs (MCA) has set up a committee to prepare the framework for Right to Repair. The framework is significant as it will give consumers a chance to repair their products at an optimal cost instead of buying new.

Under this framework, it would be mandatory for manufacturers to share their product details with customers so that they can either repair themselves or by a third party, rather than only the original manufacturer.

It will also help reduce the huge amount of electrical waste (e-waste) that piles up every year. The move will boost business for small repair shops – an important part of local economies.

Discarded e-products, ranging from equipment used in information and communication technology (ICT), home appliances, computers, audio and video products and their peripherals are known as e-waste. Now, with a click on the website (righttorepairindia.gov.

in) one may access customer care details across brands, find warranty and post-sales service information, and links to the service network of the brands.

It will save consumers’ money and contribute to circular economy objectives by improving the life span, maintenance, re-use, upgrade, recyclability, and waste handling of appliances. In short, the website will provide consumers with all answers for products needing repair.
