NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the creation of a BRICS space consortium, hours before a spacecraft from the South Asian nation landed near the moon’s South Pole on August 23.
“We are already working on the BRICS satellite constellation, but to move a step further, we should think about establishing a BRICS space exploration consortium,” he added.Space research and weather monitoring can be achieved through this, PM Modi said.
India’s achievements in space research and exploration drew applause from all members of the BRICs group after the successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram.“This for the BRICS family is a momentous moment,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The success of Chandrayaan-3 has lifted India’s prestige in the global space race and PM Modi wants to bolster the country’s place among the world’s space-faring nations. India has recently signed the Artemis Accords, a US-backed initiative with more than two dozen other countries to govern joint missions and civilian space exploration.
