GANDHINAGAR: Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, DirectorGeneral of the World Health Organisation (WHO), lauded India’s remarkable strides in healthcare coverage and initiatives during his address at the recently held G20 Health Ministers’ meeting.

The event, held under the G20 India presidency, was focused on key priorities in global health. In his speech, Tedros expressed gratitude to India for its warm hospitality and visionary leadership in hosting the G20 Summit. “I commend India for their resolute efforts in advancing universal health coverage and their groundbreaking Ayushman Bharat scheme, which stood as the world’s most extensive health assurance initiative,” stated the WHO chief.

Primary healthcare

Tedros also highlighted his visit to a Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) in Gandhinagar, where he witnessed firsthand the exceptional primary healthcare services being provided to over 1000 households. “The services delivered by the HWC were truly impressive, underlining the commitment to transforming healthcare,” he added.

The WHO head also commended Gujarat’s telemedicine facilities, which offered local prescriptions and treatment, showcasing a transformative approach to healthcare delivery. He extended his gratitude to India’s G20 Presidency for spearheading the Global Digital Health Initiative, which launched on August 19.

Holistic health

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasised highlighted international participation at the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting, with more than 70 delegates representing various nations. “We showcased India’s exemplary health model, receiving widespread appreciation. The holistic approach of the Modi Government towards the health sector was gaining recognition,” Mandaviya remarked.

During the meeting, the discussions centred on crucial themes, including health emergency prevention, pharmaceutical sector cooperation, and digital health innovations, all aimed at enhancing universal health coverage and healthcare service delivery.
