GOA: “India holds the promise of becoming a prime cruise tourism destination, harboring numerous captivating tourist spots yet to be unveiled to the world.” This was announced by Union Minister of Tourism G Kishan Reddy at the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Goa on June 19-20. Highlighting India’s vast coastline of 7,500 km and abundant rivers, the minister expressed confidence in the country’s immense growth potential in cruise industry. He affirmed the Government’s commitment to developing infrastructure for ports, both domestic and international cruise terminals.

Coastal tourism

The minister also outlined the Government’s efforts to promote coastal tourism, beach tourism, light-house tourism, and cruise tourism at the final meeting of the tourism working group.

There are plans to establish youth tourism clubs in all educational institutions as a means to encourage responsible tourism practices, announced Reddy. “These clubs will play a pivotal role in promoting responsible tourism,” he added. The minister acknowledged the post-Covid opportunity not only to rebuild the tourism sector but also to refocus on the industry’s potential and contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and circular economic growth.

Plastic pollution

Asserting the Government’s dedication to clean India mission, Reddy emphasised efforts to eradicate plastic pollution. “We are leaving no stone unturned in combating plastic pollution,” he affirmed, underscoring the Government’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

To tackle the pressing issue of plastic waste, he stressed the importance of collective action and knowledge sharing, emphasising the need for best practices. “Our commitment to reducing plastic waste requires united efforts and collaboration.
