AMONG the various philanthropic initiatives and positions held by Lord Swraj Paul, Chairman of the Caparo Group, an important one has been that of the Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton since 1999.
In the role of the Chancellor, Lord Paul presides over the university’s ceremonial occasions and to acts as the Ambassador of the University.
In 2021, on the occasion of the 90th birthday of the Chancellor Paul, Prof Geoff Layer, the then Vice-Chancellor of the university, sent Lord Paul a note of gratitude with greetings from the university community. The excerpts: It read, “On behalf of our whole university community, I extend the warmest wishes to you, our Chancellor, in celebration of your 90th birthday.
“Since becoming our Chancellor in 1999, you have been an exceptional ambassador and generous to the university, witnessing and contributing to its expansion both in UK and abroad with particular interest in India, your child home, helping us to address widening Participation to those most in need.
“Your passionate student-centric outlook means that you are known for meeting and engaging with our students and graduates, taking the time to both encourage them and to learn how we can continue to improve all we do. You are an inspiration to our UK students and those from across the world. “The University’s incredibly grateful to you for the influence that you have brought to bear to help in driving the university mission, always having our institutions interest at heart.”
