LONDON: The Indian diaspora has the highest levels of education, more professional occupation, and home ownership in England and Wales, according to recent reports.

This was said to have been stated in Census 2021 data, released in phases in the United Kingdom.

It was revealed that there were disparities among ethnic groups in various parameters. These include education, employment, health among the different diaspora residing different regions of the United Kingdom.

Working professionals

People of Indian ethnicity in England and Wales were found among the highest proportions of working professionals among all other groups. Such occupations, i.e., doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc., saw highest percentage of representation from people of Indian and Chinese ethnic groups.

Both were equally at 34 per cent each. This was followed by 33 per cent of white Irish and 30 per cent of Arabs, with Pakistanis at 20 per cent, Bangladeshis 17 per cent, and white British people at 19 per cent.

Eleven per cent of white British, according to the data, are self-employed compared to 10 per cent of Indians.

Home ownership The report said that India and the Chinese community have the highest levels of education too. Indians had 52 per cent of its people in the UK with highest levels of qualification, while the Chinese had 56 per cent of its population at that position.

The survey also found that the home ownership in England and Wales is most common for people of Indian ethnicity. The 2021 Census data of the UK reportedly put the number for people with Indian ethnicity at 71 per cent. British people followed Indians at 68 per cent.

While overcrowded housing was found most among people identified as Bangladeshi, with the number constituting 39 per cent of its population, social rented housing was seen to be common among those identified as black Afro-Caribbean.
