The Uttarakhand Government has set a target of November 9, to coincide with the state’s foundation day, for the implementation of the state’s Uniform Civil Code, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on July 15.

Making the announcement at a BJP function in Dehradun, Dhami said it was a proud achievement for the state to become the first in the country to pass the UCC bill. “Every resident of Uttarakhand is feeling proud that our state has become the first state in the country after Independence to pass legislation on UCC. I am happy that by passing UCC first, we have set an ideal before the whole country,” he said. “We have set a target that by November 9, the foundation day of the state, we will implement UCC in the state. And it will start benefiting the people of Uttarakhand,” he said.

The UCC bill was passed in the state assembly on February 7, and on March 11, it received the presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu. Earlier on July 10, the CM had said that the draft rules will be prepared by October this year, and the code will likely be implemented soon after.

A Uniform Civil Code basically means a common set of laws that all people of the nation, regardless of their religion, must follow when it comes to personal matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.

The Uttarakhand law seeks to put in place an overarching legal regime for governing personal matters, including marriage, divorce, live-in relationships and succession, regardless of religion
