SEVEN ex-chief ministers are part of the Modi Cabinet this time. Apart from Narendra Modi, the other six former CMs are Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manohar Lal, Rajnath Singh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Jitan Ram Manjhi and HD Kumaraswamy.

While Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Manohar Lal (Haryana), Rajnath Singh (Uttar Pradesh)and Sonowal belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Manjhi (Bihar) and Kumaraswamy( Karnataka) belong to the alliance partners, Hindustan Awam Morcha and Janata Dal (S) respectively.

Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat thrice before taking over as Prime Minister in 2014. Chouhan, popularly called ‘mama’ by his followers, was the CM of Madhya Pradesh, four times before he was replaced by Mohan Yadav after the Assembly polls recently. From being an RSS pracharak, Manohar Lal was the first chief minister of Haryana from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He won from the Karnal constituency in the Lok Sabha election.

Rajnath Singh was the Chief Minister of UP for a brief stint of two years from 2000 to 2002. Manjhi, who heads the HAM, and Kumaraswamy had helmed Bihar and Karnataka for short stints. Sonowal was also the first CM from the BJP in Assam who made way for Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2021 although the party had won the assembly polls under his leadership.
