Toby UsnikTraveling abroad provides numerous benefits that can enrich one’s personal and professional life. One of the primary advantages is the opportunity to broaden one’s horizons and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures. By immersing themselves in foreign countries, travelers are exposed to new customs, languages, and ways of life, which can foster greater cultural awareness and appreciation.

In addition to the cultural benefits, traveling abroad can also enhance one’s education and career prospects. International travel often exposes individuals to superior resources, facilities, and industry connections, allowing them to receive a higher quality of education or gain valuable work experience. The ability to learn a new language while abroad is also a highly valuable skill in today’s globalized job market.

Beyond academics and career development, traveling abroad helps individuals develop important life skills such as independence, adaptability, empathy, and problem-solving. Living and navigating unfamiliar environments pushes travelers out of their comfort zones, enabling personal growth and the development of self-reliance. The experience of making new connections and navigating challenging situations can also lead to the formation of lifelong friendships and professional networks.

Traveling abroad has also been shown to have positive impacts on mental and physical health. Studies have found that travel can reduce stress, boost mood and happiness, and even lower the risk of depression. The act of exploring new places and engaging in new activities can also promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

Family Travel Abroad

In an era where education models are constantly evolving, some families are taking a bold leap towards unconventional learning experiences. Enter Andi and Randy Almond, along with their children Finn (now 15) and Aria (now 12), who embarked on a remarkable 13-month worldschooling adventure that spanned 27 countries across all seven continents. Our recent interview on The Caring Economy went deep into their decision to break free from the traditional mold, exploring the challenges, rewards, and lasting impact this journey has had on their family and future endeavors.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Andi is a global leader of strategic and change communications at management consultancy McKinsey & Company. She is the firm’s former global head of diversity, equity, and inclusion and is also a former journalist (and voice behind the popular travel account, @4almondsabroad on Instagram).

Born in Idaho, raised in Oklahoma, Randy traveled abroad to Berlin as a junior in college through IES Abroad and Humboldt University, which sparked his love of travel and continual learning of cultures very different from his own. In his career he has worked primarily in startups in the tech space as head of marketing or Chief Revenue Officer. Today he is pursuing his own early-stage startup.

The Almonds’ worldschooling adventure wasn’t a mere checklist of tourist destinations. It was a conscious effort to replace the confines of a classroom with the boundless world itself. From bustling marketplaces in Marrakech to the awe-inspiring peaks of the Himalayas, every experience became an opportunity for immersive learning. Imagine history lessons coming alive amidst the ruins of ancient Rome, or scientific concepts taking root while exploring the diverse ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands. This approach fostered a love for lifelong learning, as curiosity was ignited by the sights, sounds, and cultures encountered along the way.
During the interview the Almonds shared their motivations behind this unconventional choice. Learn whether it was a desire to break free from the rigidity of traditional education, or perhaps a yearning to cultivate a deeper understanding of the world’s diverse tapestry. The interview also describes reveals the logistical complexities of planning such a diverse itinerary, from navigating visa requirements to finding suitable accommodations for a family of four on the move.

No journey is without its challenges, and worldschooling is no exception. The interview explores the hurdles the Almonds faced as a family on the road. Adjusting to new environments, managing the logistics of homeschooling, and navigating potential culture clashes are just a few hurdles they likely encountered. But through these challenges, they undoubtedly fostered resilience, resourcefulness, and a deeper appreciation for the comforts of home.

A World of Inspiration: The “Caring Economy” in Action

Traveling the globe exposed the Almonds to a kaleidoscope of cultures and ways of life. It also offered them a window into the “caring economy” – businesses and initiatives that prioritize social good alongside profit. Audiences learn about inspiring examples they encountered withvolunteerism, networking with new acquaintances, and regularly sharing their journey highlights on social media.

This transformative experience had a profound impact on the Almond family’s future aspirations. Andi discusses how her worldschooling experiences are influencing her endeavors at McKinsey & Company and Randy’s entrepreneurial journey is growing even more exciting.

The impact on their children, Finn and Aria, is equally intriguing. The interview explores how this experience has shaped their worldview, fostered independence, and fueled their own passions for learning and exploration.

Andi also shares a glimpse into the book she is writing about their travels. It will offer insights into the challenges and triumphs they faced, along with the invaluable lessons learned that they wish to share with the world.

Words of Wisdom: A Message for Our Audience

This interview is a must-listen for families considering a worldschooling adventure or anyone seeking inspiration to lead a more purpose-driven life. The Almonds share pearls of wisdom gleaned from their experience, offering valuable advice to our audience. For example, they emphasize the importance of flexibility, the power of cultural immersion, or the joy of lifelong learning. Their insights will empower others to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new experiences, and create their own unique learning journeys.
