NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has retained power in Madhya Pradesh with a historic triumph in the Assembly elections, winning 163 seats.

The Congress’ plans to wrest power from the BJP were shattered as the grand old party has managed to win just 66 seats.

Speculations are rife on who will likely be the next CM. The BJP went to the polls without a CM face contrary to Congress which projected Kamal Nath as their candidate.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan once again seems to be the front runner for the CM’s post, but Jyotiraditya Scindia could also be considered for the post, according to a party insider. Many party leaders attributed the electoral success to PM Narendra Modi, who addressed as many as 14 poll rallies in the state.

Retains Madhya Pradesh

The BJP got 48.55 per cent votes, a gain of more than seven per cent compared to 2018. There was no antiincumbency in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan told a TV channel on BJP’s record win in the state.

Former chief minister Kamal Nath said the party would introspect “why we couldn’t connect with the voters”, while veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, refused to respond. Amid the sound of crackers, jubilant workers were seen dancing to the beating of drums as joyous scenes prevailed at the BJP office, while the Congress office wore a deserted look.

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections were held on November 17, 2023 to elect all 230 members of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Voting was carried out in a single phase.
